The property in question falls within the “Monte” typology of the Algarve barrocal and due to its characteristics, it was probably built in the first half of the 20th century.
The house appears to be multifamily, accommodating 2 families. It is a rectangular building with 2 “naves” and, among other formal features, we find the “casa de Fora”, flanked by bedrooms, the kitchen at the rear with its traditional chimney and even the support compartments as is the case of the haystack and shipyard. Outside we find the oven, the cistern and some buildings to support animals.
In the approach proposed here, the aim is to reconstruct and interpret the Barrocal “mount” model, using its concepts, image, way of life and traditional materials and not forgetting the adaptation to today's ways of life and expectations.
What is intended is to honor the memory of these types of buildings that, although they cannot be completely rehabilitated due to their poor state of abandonment, can be reconstructed in the image of what they were before.
It is therefore proposed that the building's initial body be kept in its original location. In order to respect the rectangular shape of the “hills” of the barrocal, the new extension will then have to be located perpendicular to the existing body. This "L" formed by the 2 buildings thus formed a large outdoor living area with a close connection between the interior and the exterior.
In order to take advantage of the natural slope of the land, it is proposed that the patio platform can accommodate a storage garage and vehicles as well as some necessary technical area.
Still in order to take advantage of the natural slope of the land, it is proposed that the pool exists on a platform below the patio of the house.
In relation to the complementary elements of the form, that is, the decorative elements and construction methods, there is a preference and exaltation of tradition and the existing.
In this sense, it is decided to use local techniques of covering (and existing in the previous construction) of wood, straw tile and eaves. The ex-libris of this type of construction will also be used: the decorative chimney.
